Having this happen is definitely frustrating. I find the best solution is to be prepared. When this happened to me, I had a spare credit card on me that I could use without delay. Of course, I learned the hard way when this first happened to me, but being prepared with a reserve card takes all the frustration away. ⁠

The word appassimento comes from the Italian verb ‘appassire’ meaning to fade, wither, or shrivel. It refers to the process of drying grapes off the vine, usually in naturally ventilated warehouses called fruttai. Drying the grapes results in concentrated flavour, sugar, and acidity and powerful character. The Veneto region in northeast Italy is known for its appassimento wines, most notably Amarone della Valpolicella Classico. Today is National Wine Day and a good reason to try some appassimento if you haven’t already. Salute!⁠
